Shomron: Gateway to the Land

Samaria is where the Jewish story in the Land of Israel begins, where Abraham first enters the land, as well as the entire people under Joshua. Here is where the people stood on the mountain of blessing and the mountain of curses and declared their allegiance to God. Here is the place where the tabernacle stood for nearly 400 years in Shilo. Here is Ai, the second city conquered under Joshua.

So much of the Tanach (Hebrew Bible) happened here that you can barely walk without stubbing your toe on a biblical artifact.

A day in the Shomron will include visits to the sites already mentioned as well as possible visits to award winning wineries, including one which is trying to rediscover the ancient Judean wine-grapes. Or if wine’s not your thing, we can visit Saboneto, a soap factory which uses all local, organic ingredients and was created with the intention of providing work for people with severe physical and mental limitations. Or one of the biggest modern olive presses in Israel, known for it’s high quality product. Or a biblical themed petting zoo in Maale Levonah for the kids!

TRIP ITINERARY

We'll start whenever you choose with pickup at any location in Jerusalem or Gush Etzion. Pickup in other locations available for an additional fee.

Morning

Beit El: The site of Jacob’s dream and one of the two false temples built by Jeroboam to compete with Jerusalem.

Shilo: The huge archeological tel (man made hill) has been completely excavated. We can see the biblical period city, as well as the site of the tabernacle itself. They also have a breathtakingly beautiful new movie which projects onto glass over a view of the site itself.

Possible Additions in this area include:

-Biblically themed petting zoo in Maale Levona

-Achiya olive oil factory, one of the biggest in the country

-Psagot Winery, where they are trying to revive the ancient viticulture of Judea

Lunch

There are several options for our midday meal, including pizza or a local cafe at one end, or a full, meat meal on Har Bracha (Mt. Grizim). The latter requires setup ahead of time and is not always available.

Shechem

Driving north from Shilo we will pass the fields where the Benjaminites found their brides after the civil war between the tribes almost destroyed them, arriving about half an hour later at Mt. Grizim. We will see the home of the Samaritan sect, including the site where they do the Passover sacrifice every year to this day. Then we will continue to a lookout point on top of the mountain where we can look into biblical Shechem, including Joseph’s tomb. We will stand here, on the Mountain of Blessing, and read the blessings and curses read by the Jewish people upon entering the land.

We will then begin the roughly hour long drive back to Jerusalem. Additions to the day CAN include; a stop in Giva, the home of King Shaul (Saul) and site of an unfinished palace begun by the king of Jordan shortly before the six day war; a drive down the Jordan valley (extra cost) to visit the actual site where the Jewish people crossed into the land of Israel at Gilgal and a view of Jericho. And much more. Get in touch to plan your trip today!
