The Negev Desert

The negev contains the majority of Israel's open space, a bounty of natural wonders, biblical and historical sites, and is considered by many to be Israel's great frontier.

Israel’s founding father David Ben Gurion considered the Negev to be the next step in Jewish pioneering in the Land of Israel. Today, much of his vision to make the desert bloom has been accomplished. We will visit a monument to the Negev Brigade who fought to make this land part of Israel, and discuss the biblical passages where the patriarchs and matriarchs sojourned here and dug a well used until today (can add visitor center to itinerary if desired). We will visit the final home and burial site of Ben Gurion, delving into his complex story and thinking about his legacy from several different perspectives. After lunch along the way or in Mitzpe Ramon, we will visit the Ramon Crater.

Often referred to as ‘Israel’s Grand Canyon,’ the Ramon Crater is a great rift in the Earth’s crust. We will start with a view from above by the visitor’s center, and make stops at several of the unique formations in the crater itself, including the ‘Colored Sands’ and ‘The Carpentry,’ before starting our drive back home.

Possible additions/alternatives for the day include:

  • Abraham’s Well Visitor Center
  • Alpaca Farm
  • Mitzpe Ramon Visitor Center Tour
  • Susiya
  • Sandboarding on Negev Dunes, 6. Various Hikes

This day includes so many options you should consider this a 'sample itinerary.' When you contact me we will personalize it to suit your group!

Drive, Beer Sheva

The day will start with a long drive from Jerusalem, the earlier we can hit the road the better! Our first stop will be at Beer Sheva, the capital of the Negev, at the monument to the Negev Brigade. We can also visit Abraham’s Well in the city if you’d like to add it (especially for kids).

Sde Boker, Ben Gurion Tomb

Sde Boker is the kibbutz where David Ben Gurion lived the final years of his life after leaving politics and where he is buried. There is a museum discussing his life and legacy there, as well as the tomb itself.

Mitzpe Ramon

At this small city deep in the desert we will stop for lunch and then enjoy a stunning view down into the crater. If you’d like we can also include a tour of the visitor center (time allowing).

Ramon Crater, and Drive Back

We will drive down into the crater and visit several of the unique and interesting formations exposed there, including ‘The Carpentry’ and ‘The Colored Sands.’ If you would like to include a hike in the day there are several in the area (other parts of the tour will have to be shortened or skipped to make time for these).

When we finish exploring the crater we will begin the drive back to our starting point.
