Prophets and Madmen

Walking in the footsteps of Joshua, Jeremiah, and the Dead Sea sect

We will start with a drive down to the Jordan river at Gilgal, where the Jewish people first entered the Land of Israel under Joshua. From there we will go to Qumran, where the Dead Sea Sect foresaw a messianic end-time and when their destruction did come, burying their scrolls in the nearby caves.  We will explore the nearby desert with the family-friendly hike at Nahal Og, discussing why the Torah was given in the quiet of the desert.

Finally, we will visit Jeremiah’s home town of Anatot, where we will go down to the nearby oasis of the Pratt river and see where he acted out one of his most famous prophecies.

A visit to the Dead Sea (normal beach) can be added to this tour, and it can be adjusted to be either a full day or a half day.

TRIP ITINERARY

The following describes the full day itinerary. It can be adjusted to a half day excursion.

Morning

The day begins by driving by Jericho to Gilgal, the site on the Jordan river where the Jewish people first entered the Land of Israel under Joshua. We will continue on to Qumran, where the Dead Sea sectarians went to escape what they saw as the defilement of the Temple in Jerusalem and see where the first Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered.

Lunch

We can bring lunch, or stop at ‘Cafe Cafe,’ near Kibbutz Almog. The restaurant is kosher l’mehadrin (dairy).

Afternoon

After lunch we will go into the deep desert on a family friendly hike in Nahal Og, and discuss the secret of why the Torah was given in the desert. Then we will finish our day by driving through the prophet Jeremiah’s home town of Anatot and visiting the desert spring oasis (Pratt) where he acted out one of his famous prophecies.

Our next stop will be to drive back up to Jerusalem and, time allowing, to enjoy a breathtaking view of the Old City and the Temple Mount, as well as the being-rebuilt city of Jerusalem before dropping you off at your hotel.
