The Golan Heights

This high plateau captured by Israel in 1967 is critical to Israel's defense, and also a lot of fun!

The Golan Heights sits at Israel’s northeastern tip, bordering Syria and Lebanon. This high plateau is sparsely populated and full open spaces and parks, making it Israel’s backyard where people go to experience nature (that’s not a desert). The area is home to endless trails, many of which involve walking in water, which makes them perfect for keeping cool outdoors in the Summer. It also boasts wineries, Biblical and other archeological sites such as Tel Dan, a chocolate factory and much more.

Because of variations in season, physical ability of the tourist, and other factors, it’s hard to tell you the ‘standard’ tour, but a common tour might start with driving up to the Northern end of the Golan to Tel Dan, where a short walk/hike ends at ancient Dan, where Jeroboam built a false temple. From there we would go to Qatzrin to get lunch and visit a Talmudic period village, then on to a former army base on Mt. Bental where we can look out over into Syria and ending the day with a chocolate tasting and chocolate making workshop at De Karina before heading back to our home base for the night.

Why THIS Tour?

Your guide is an Orthodox rabbi, with a wide and deep familiarity with the story of the area, the Jewish people, and the modern state. His expertise is connecting the story of the place, to the story of the Jewish people, and to you.

Since this is a private tour, you're the boss! You can change around any details to suit your preferences, stop in a park for an hour for the baby to take a nap if you like, extend or shorten the tour, and more. It's all up to you, and changes can even be made on the fly.

This day is full of beautiful nature, jaw dropping stories, and deeply meaningful religious sites. There's something for everyone in the family!

This day includes so many options you should consider this a 'sample itinerary.' When you contact me we will personalize it to suit your group!

Drive, Tel Dan

The day will start with a long drive from Jerusalem, the earlier we can hit the road the better! There are various options for light hiking at Tel Dan or a simpler route to get us to the ancient site of the city of Dan and Jeroboams false temple, as well as the gate of the city from the times of Abraham.

Qatzrin, Capital of the Golan

Qatzrin is the largest town in the Golan, and we will stop here for lunch before going on to see a partially rebuilt Jewish village from Talmudic times, complete with homes and a beautiful two story synagogue.

Mt. Bental

We will drive up the slopes of Mt. Bental to the former army base at its peak, where we will discuss the strategic importance of the Golan heights, the largest tank battle in the world after WWII which was fought in the valley below, and get a breathtaking view of the Syrian plateau, peeking deep into Syria and getting a (safe!) glimpse of the Syrian civil war.

De Karina

We will end the day with a visit to De Karina, a boutique chocolatier based in Kibbutz Ein Zivan nearby. There we will enjoy a tour of the factory, a tasting, and a chocolate making workshop, before starting our drive back south with bellies full of chocolate!
